Personal and Family Papers

Collections of personal papers in the Smith-Layton Archives can be found in the Sourisseau Academy and Edith C. Smith collections. Letters, photographs, diaries, daybooks and ledgers shed light on the lives and businesses of several local families and individuals during the late 19th and early 20th centuries

Sourisseau Academy collections

  • Andrew P. Hill, Jr. Papers: The bulk of this collection chronicles the training and career of Hill, a professional educator and architect over the course of sixty years, from approximately 1910-1975. The photographs in the collection cover approximately 110 years of California history, from 1860 to 1970.

  • Herbert C. Jones Papers: The papers in this collection are the home files of Senator Herbert C. Jones, and cover the years 1902-1969.

  • Pedro de Saisset Family Papers: These materials are mostly comprised of photographs of members of the Pedro de Saisset family from the 1860s to the 1950s but also includes correspondence between family members and a few pieces of ephemera related to the family.

Edith C. Smith collections

  • James A. Clayton Family Papers: A collection of correspondence and photographs that document life in the Clayton family of Santa Clara County during the latter half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.

  • Leonard McKay Research Papers: This collection consists of photographs and papers that document the history of the Santa Clara Valley region, and were collected by the late printer and historian Leonard McKay during his personal research into the history of the region.
  •  
  • William H. Talbot Family Papers: This collection chronicles approximately sixty years of Talbot family and business history and consists primarily of three extensive family photograph albums and a small number of ephemeral materials related to Pope & Talbot, Inc. and the Talbot family.
